FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

Dear Mercy Families,

In researching various resources from the Sisters of Mercy, I came across a reflection that seemed to speak so clearly to where we are as a Mercy community and as a world united by a pandemic.

Sister Helen Amos shared that she was reminded in a homily years ago that "Lent is meant to interrupt us, to stop us in our tracks and direct our focus to mysteries that run beneath the preoccupations of our daily routines." It seems Lent and COVID-19 could be interchangeable in this thought; perhaps that is the gift of this Lenten season- that we were quite literally stopped in our tracks and forced to slow down to reassess all that our lives have become in the busyness that this digital world has led us to.

Though we are all being impacted by COVID-19 and there is great financial stress within our community, I do hope that we can all find comfort in the gift of time that we have received. Perhaps you have had a heart-to-heart with your daughter that you otherwise would not have had the time to have. Maybe you were home on a day that your daughter just really needed you to be present. And maybe you have been able to once again enjoy family dinners in a way you haven't for months or years.

I hope you can take a moment on Sunday to be thankful for the gifts that you have received this past month, and I hope that if you find yourself deeply stressed or burdened, that you find hope and comfort in the miracle of our faith.

Have a wonderful Easter!

Thanks,
Natalie

This past Friday April 3, The CIF voted to cancel the spring season for all athletic competition, thus, ending the Spring season for our Gymnastic, Lacrosse, Softball, Swimming and Track and Field teams. While the decision was not unexpected due to the on going shelter in place mandate, it was still very disappointing news for all of our student athletes who put in a substantial amount of preparation to participate on their teams.

Our coaches will continue to communicate with their teams up until the point that the season would be completed. All of our athletes will be encouraged by their coaches to follow training programs as if they were still in season. All of our teams will hold Zoom team meetings in May to properly recognize the Seniors that are on each team. We will be communicating with all team members once we have established how we will want all Mercy uniforms and team gear returned to the school.

We still have some athletes that did not turn in uniforms. Once school resumes, all uniforms will be expected to be turned back. Any uniforms not turned back in will result in the family being charged a replacement fee.

SAT exam
The College Board announced that they are canceling the May 2, 2020 SAT exam, as well as the makeup tests for the March 14 exam. Students are encouraged to register for the June 6, 2020 exam; however, this could change as the College Board continues to assess the coronavirus outbreak in the coming months. Please click here for continuous updates regarding testing. If you received a fee waiver for the March SAT, your benefits should go back into your account once the refunds go through. Registration for fall dates usually does not open until May or June.

AP exams
The College Board releases a information about developing resources for the possibility of taking AP exams at home. Your AP Teachers and I will keep you updated as more information becomes available. Thank you for your patience. Please note that AP scores typically do not affect your college admission offers.

ACT exam
The ACT is canceling the April 4, 2020 exam and rescheduling it to June 13, 2020. If you are registered to take the ACT exam in April, please make sure to check your email for a message from the ACT in the next few days informing you of the postponement and instructions to reschedule your test to June 13 or a future national test date. There will be no additional fee for that. ACT has released FAQs here. Registration for fall dates usually does not open until May or June.

The colleges are well aware of what is happening and how it will affect our Class of 2021. I am hopeful that they will adjust their admissions criteria and process in a way that helps all applicants in the Class of 2021. As more colleges are going test-optional, I am following what the colleges will do for our students affected by Coronavirus. I will keep you informed through the enews, but feel free to email me directly with questions. I will continue to update you as I hear more from the colleges.

Colleges are also aware that the Coronavirus will impact decisions for the class of 2020.  As you are deciding which college you hope to attend, connect with the website and your admissions counselor via email.  Colleges are hosting chats, virtual open houses, and many more fun events.  Please attend them! It may not be ideal, but it is a great way to connect with the campus. Feel free to email me with any questions you might have.
