Yesterday was a wonderful day of planning for both the present and the future of Mercy High School at our Board of Directors retreat. We are truly blessed to have such a hardworking Board of Directors with a variety of skills to share with Mercy. We started the day focusing on our mission and discussing our foundress, Catherine McAuley.
Anytime I have the chance to reflect on Catherine McAuley, I am always amazed at the extraordinary woman she was. Catherine was a woman of deep faith who was extremely committed to serving others. She was not afraid to challenge the conventions of her day even when she faced opposition to her desire to build the House of Mercy, a home for the poor. As an unmarried woman who was not in a religious order, many questioned Catherine, yet she always found support in Father Armstrong.
There is much to learn from Catherine and Father Armstrong. Both were not afraid to challenge the norm of their days for what in their heart they knew was right, and they were not afraid to support one another when it would have been far easier to be silent. Catherine did not let obstacles get in her way, but rather found creative solutions to move past any challenges she encountered such as starting her own religious order to ensure her House of Mercy would not close.
It is our hope that our students are never afraid to speak up for what they believe is right and that they find passion in something that will guide them throughout their lives. It is always our goal to partner with you to nurture our Mercy girls to become women of conviction and compassion just like Catherine. Please don't be afraid to tell us what more we can do to meet this goal.
Thanks,
