WEEKLY FEATURE

Image

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and each year, Mercy gathers for activities and reflection to honor members of our community that have been affected. Sponsored by the Girls Athletic Association (GAA), the Dig Pink volleyball game is a highlight of Pink Week. Last night we had a great turnout at Serra, and our Frosh and JV teams came away with hard-fought wins. Shirts are still on sale in the cafeteria, and proceeds go to benefit research. Next Friday the 26th, we will hold a Breast Cancer Awareness Rally on the Green, where it is a tradition for students to ceremoniously cut at least 8 inches of their hair to donate to Locks of Love, an organization that provides hair prosthetics to children with permanent and/or temporary hair loss. (Permission slips for donating are available in the SBO office) This is a cause very close to our community, and we appreciate the support and participation in these activities.

Attention Senior Parents: Join us in celebrating your senior by placing a Yearbook Recognition Ad for your student by November 1st. To purchase, click HERE. Ad space is limited so purchase yours today!

A few tips for creating your ad
Words: Think about the message from the point of view of your daughter:

  • What moments in their life were significant?
  • Does the family have any inside jokes that would make the tribute special for her?
  • What do you admire most about her?

Photos:

  • The ad will look better if the photos have the same orientation as the picture box
  • Use clear high-resolution photos. If a photo is blurry, it will be blurry in the ad
  • Use the cropping tools on the website to crop out unnecessary background to focus on your student

Mercy Athlete of the Week:

Tennis player Karla Joachin Alvarez

The Mercy Burlingame Varsity Tennis Team has seen some tough losses recently but has remained resilient and purposeful. No one has epitomized these traits more than Karla. She has been a positive role model on and off the court through our struggles and has helped our team bounce back with a resounding win this past Tuesday vs Mercy SF. Playing in the #1 Doubles position, Karla has helped our team with her passion, energy and enthusiasm. Great job Karla, keep it going!

From the Head of School

You have heard me talk often at Mercy about how we graduate caring, resilient, confident young women. Helping them to make the transition from uncertain 8th graders to confident high school graduates begins when they enter Mercy. This transformation is truly a partnership between you as parents and all of us at Mercy. This article, "The Confidence Gap for Girls", appeared in the October 4th New York Times. I think you may find it informative and helpful.
