*As a school sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy, we at Mercy High School are proud of our diversity. We practice hospitality and our Catholic faith that call us to "welcome the stranger." The following is a statement issued by the Sisters of Mercy Institute Leadership Team on the pending elimination of DACA.
Sisters of Mercy Condemn Trump Administration's Immoral and
Unjust Ending of DACA for Young Immigrants
September 05, 2017
Today's announcement by the Trump Administration to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program represents an historic injustice and a violation of the human dignity of over 800,000 young people, while diminishing us all as a nation.
DACA, put in place by the previous Administration only after repeated failures in Congress to pass just, comprehensive immigration reform, has granted work permits and enabled young immigrants to attend school and raise families without fear of deportation. DACA recipients have become some of the most talented and hard-working members of our Mercy educational institutions and the local communities in which we live and serve.
Sisters of Mercy and our partners around the United States have a long history of working with immigrants. Our Catholic faith calls us to "welcome the stranger" and ensure a dignified life for all God's people. We join others in the faith community to stand in solidarity with DACA recipients and add our voice in strong resistance to the immoral ending of this program, as well as the Administration's threats to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for other immigrant communities.
Although President Trump had repeatedly pledged to treat DACA recipients "with heart," his decision to wind down DACA is deeply troubling. We agree that Congress needs to pass just immigration policy reform, but this action by the Administration abdicates its responsibility and promise to DACA recipients, and undermines our nation's professed values of fairness, welcome and compassion.
We will not stand by as DACA recipients and their families, as well as other undocumented immigrants and vulnerable groups, are scapegoated and blamed for the economic and social problems facing this country.
We will continue to pray and stand in solidarity with immigrant communities. We will work with other coalitions to end the cruel systems of detention and deportation, and advocate for Congress to pass the Dream Act of 2017 and other just bipartisan legislation that enshrines the values of family unity and replaces this country's outdated immigration system.
*Help Needed for Alumnae Homecoming
On Sunday, September 17th, Mercy alumnae from around the country will gather and celebrate Homecoming. We will need some students and parents (are of course welcome to help) to help us out that morning! We will be putting note cards on the tables, arranging name tags and directing alumnae to the Coffee/Mass with the Sisters.
We will need help from 9:00 am to 11:00 am. You will need to come in full Mercy dress uniform. You will of course be given basic service hours for this help. Ask a friend to come with you – this is a very fun morning and we could really use your help! Please let Mrs. Fraher if you would be interested in helping that day! You can contact her at: cfraher@mercyhsb.com or call 6650.762.1192
