*Storm on Thursday?!

Depending upon which weather report you read/see/hear there is a potential for a “major storm,” “worst storm in 10 years,” or simply a “storm” beginning Wednesday night through Thursday evening. We will keep an eye on what is happening and will monitor our campus.

If, for any reason, Mercy High School would need to close we will send announcements through our emergency channel – Alert Solutions. Depending upon the settings you selected you may hear from the school through email or text message. Information will also be posted on Schoology.

While we don’t expect an emergency we just wanted to prepare you for any eventuality.

*Noon Update – Wednesday

The latest forecasts for Burlingame from Weather.com and the National Weather Service indicate rain beginning overnight; winds picking up starting at 6:00 a.m. (25-30 mph). The heaviest wind and rain are expected in this area from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Thursday. The winds dissipate after 2:00 but heavy rain continues through 4:00 p.m.

Thursday was supposed to be Pajama Day at Mercy. Since there is nothing worse than wet flannel pajamas, we will announce to the girls at the end of school today that Pajama Day has been moved to Friday and Thursday will actually become Rudolph the Red-Nosed RainGEAR Day. The girls should wear rain gear or clothing that can get wet and use hoods, hats or umbrellas between Russell and the Mansion.  If conditions warrant and it appears to be unsafe outside, we will not have the girls pass between buildings.

Also, we will talk to the girls about safe driving to and from school. If conditions in your area (especially along the coast) are horrible and you are concerned about hazardous driving situations please just call and let us know your daughter will be out on Thursday.

Weather forecasting being an inexact science, it is truly impossible to really know what this storm will bring to all of our neighborhoods until it happens. We will need to be flexible and deal with whatever happens as we go through tomorrow.

Head of School

*Financial Assistance Program for 2015-2016
Mercy High School recognizes that families have varying financial needs and make financial sacrifices which include adjusting spending priorities and maximizing both parents’ earnings to provide their daughters with a strong academic education. The Financial Assistance Program at Mercy strives to help those families who, even with personal sacrifices, have a difficult time meeting the full tuition obligation. Awards are made for a one-year period, families must re-apply each year.

The application process is fair and confidential. Assessments are done by an outside firm (TADS) that specializes in school financial assistance programs. Financial aid awards are made based on a family’s demonstrated need and the availability of school funds.

All families who would like to be considered for financial assistance for the 2015-2016 school year must complete an online financial aid application. Applications must be submitted by February 6, 2015* with all necessary documentation.  This link https://www.mercyhsb.com/page.cfm?p=131 will direct you to our website for further information and the online TADS application.  Please contact Lynn Beal at 650-762-1101 or lbeal@mercyhsb.com if you have any questions.

Please note returning 10th, 11th and 12th grade families must apply by February 6, 2015. Families that have both an applying 8th grader and returning student must meet the December 15th deadline. Late applications will be processed and reviewed, but meeting the appropriate deadline is strongly recommended.

Attention parents of freshmen and sophomores! Do want want your daughter to be involved with the UN?! We have an amazing opportunity for her.

A Model United Nations Conference @ The Nueva School

Nueva School is proud to be hosting their first Model UN conference March 7-8, 2015 at the Nueva Upper School campus (131 E 28th Ave, San Mateo). The conference is open for all students grades 6-10, and only Nueva, Menlo, and Crystal Springs and Mercy have been invited to attend.

We’re trying to make a cohesive conference that provides enough challenge for everyone, while still not too intense for new delegates. Since the conference is local and low cost, we think it would be a great first experience for students who have never tried Model UN before. Experienced delegates have advanced committees and topics available to make sure they’re challenged as well.

Registration is open at www.nuevamun.com and will close on December 20th. I’m really looking forward to having Mercy students there!

Please let me know if you have any questions.
