English Department

The English Department prepares students to become thoughtful readers, skilled writers, and confident communicators who engage critically with diverse ideas, perspectives, and texts.

Through literature spanning genres, time periods, perspectives, and cultures, students analyze complex ideas, recognize nuance, and communicate with clarity and purpose. As students progress through the program, increasingly sophisticated texts strengthen their critical thinking and deepen their understanding of themselves and others. Literature and writing provide intentional opportunities to examine themes connected to the Critical Concerns of the Sisters of Mercy and consider the role of language and storytelling in understanding and responding to the world.

Courses Highlight

English 1 - Introduction to Literary Analysis

English 1 is a genre course designed to familiarize students with the various major literary forms. The novel, short story, drama, mythology, and poetry are introduced, and their elements are studied. In addition, grammar and usage conventions are reviewed. Writing assignments focus on multi-paragraph compositions, which are developed in response to the literature studied. Reading comprehension and vocabulary development begins. Creative writing and enrichment activities are also included.

English 2 Honors - World Literature

English 2 Honors provides students with exceptional ability in English with the opportunity to study world literature with greater sophistication. This course will be accelerated, allowing for in-depth exposure to authors not covered in the regular English 2 course. It provides more opportunities for instruction and practice in analytical and argumentative writing. This course also includes extensive vocabulary, critical reading preparation, and continued focus on the multi-paragraph essay.

English 3 - Multicultural American Discourse

English 3 for Juniors is a study in the varied textual representations of the diverse American experience. Students analyze multiple nonfiction and fiction readings, all of which focus on critical thinking and close reading skills. There is also an emphasis on argumentation, research, and rhetorical analysis. Focus is given to the themes that both characterize and reflect America’s values and the rich diversity of her people. Writing skills, with an emphasis of mastering the rules of standard written English, are further developed, and the rules of grammar and usage are comprehensively reviewed.

AP English Language & Composition

English 3 AP is an intellectually challenging course that combines the study of classic and contemporary American literature with multiple nonfiction readings, all of which focus on rhetorical analysis and critical thinking skills. Emphasis is given to expository writing in order to prepare students for the Advanced Placement English Language and Composition Examination. To that end, students analyze and write argumentative, rhetorical analysis, and synthesis essays throughout the year. Attention is also given to expanding vocabulary, improving test-taking skills, and mastering the rules of standard written English.

AP English Literature & Composition

AP English IV is designed for seniors who have demonstrated superior ability in English. The course focuses on in-depth discussion and composition related to the survey of major authors and literary movements from the Anglo-Saxon period to the present. Emphasis is given to the collateral reading of scholarly literary criticism and preparation for the Advanced Placement Examination in English Literature and Composition. This course is certified by the University of California as an honors course.
